He was at St. Vincent's Hospital afterwards. Thompson was there, too.
The next morning we could see some of the lifeboats. One of the boats had a sail up, and he came pretty close, and then we said, "One, two, three"; we said that quite often. We did not talk very much, except that we would say, "One, two, three," and scream together for help.
SENATOR SMITH: Was this collapsible boat that you were in filling with water?
MR. ABELSETH: There was water on the top.
SENATOR SMITH: Were you on the top of the overturned collapsible boat?
MR. ABELSETH: No. The boat was not capsized. We were standing on the deck. In this little boat the canvas was not raised up. We tried to raise the canvas up but we could not get it up. We stood all night in about 12 or 14 inches of water on this thing and our feet were in the water all the time. I could not say exactly how long we were there, but I know it was more than four hours on this raft.

SENATOR SMITH: The sailboat?
MR. ABELSETH: Yes; when the Carpathia came she was picked up. There were several boats there then. It was broad daylight and you could see the Carpathia. Then this boat sailed down to us and took us aboard, and took us in to the Carpathia. I helped row in to the Carpathia.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see any icebergs on that morning?
MR. ABELSETH: We saw three big ones. They were quite a ways off.
SENATOR SMITH: I want to direct your attention again to the steerage. Do you think the passengers in the steerage and in the bow of the boat had an opportunity to get out and up on the decks, or were they held back?
MR. ABELSETH: Yes, I think they had an opportunity to get up.
SENATOR SMITH: There were no gates or doors locked, or anything that kept them down?
MR. ABELSETH: No, sir, not that I could see.
SENATOR SMITH: You said that a number of them climbed up one of these cranes?
MR. ABELSETH: That was on the top, on the deck; after they got on the deck. That was in order to get up on this boat deck.

M. ABELSETH : Non. Le canot n’a pas chaviré. Nous étions sur le pont. Dans ce petit canot, la toile n’a pas été soulevée. Nous avons essayé de la soulever, mais nous n’avons pas pu la lever. Nous étions debout toute la nuit dans environ 12 ou 14 pouces (30 à 35 cm) d’eau sur cette chose et nos pieds étaient dans l’eau tout le temps. Je ne pourrais pas dire exactement combien de temps nous avons été là, mais je sais que c’était plus de quatre heures sur ce radeau.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Le voilier?
M. ABELSETH : Oui; lorsque le Carpathia est arrivé, on est montés à bord. Il y avait plusieurs canots. Il faisait grand jour et on pouvait voir le Carpathia. Puis ce bateau descendit vers nous et nous prit à bord, à bord du Carpathia. J’ai aidé à ramer jusqu’au Carpathia.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu des icebergs ce matin-là?
M. ABELSETH : Nous en avons vu trois grands. Ils étaient très loin.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je veux attirer votre attention encore une fois sur la question des 3ème classe. Pensez-vous que les passagers à l’avant du bateau ont eu l’occasion de sortir et de monter sur les ponts, ou ont-ils été retenus?
M. ABELSETH : Oui, je pense qu’ils ont eu l’occasion de monter.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Il n’y avait pas de portes ou de portes verrouillées, ou quoi que ce soit qui les empêchait de s’ouvrir?
M. ABELSETH : Non, monsieur, pas à ma connaissance.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous avez dit qu’un certain nombre d’entre eux ont escaladé l’une de ces grues?
M. ABELSETH : C’était sur le dessus, sur le pont; après ils sont montés sur le pont. C’était pour monter sur le pont des embarcations.
